Homicide Cleanup Services, Step by Step

Homicide cleanup usually includes three services. This page covers what each one does, when it is needed, and the records you should receive when it is complete.

Why the work comes in three parts

A homicide scene is often larger and more complex than other trauma cleanups. Blood may be spread across rooms, police may leave a lot of residue, and parts of the building may need to come out.

Splitting the work into three services helps you see what you are paying for. It also helps insurers and victim compensation programs, which may treat cleanup and rebuilding differently. If an estimate lists all three, ask the company to point out what it saw that calls for each one. A clear, patient answer is a good sign that the company plans the job around your property rather than a fixed package.

The services, one by one

Extensive Blood Remediation

Who it is for: Properties where blood reached more than one room, a large area, or items like stairs and vehicles. It is the main service on nearly every homicide job.

The crew traces every path where blood may have traveled. They seal off each work zone and pick up any glass or sharp debris first. Soaked flooring, drywall, or trim is cut out, and remaining surfaces are cleaned and disinfected. Hard surfaces may be tested afterward to confirm they are clean.

What you should get: Photos, a room-by-room list of work done, and a waste disposal record you can give to insurers or a compensation program.

Evidence & Investigation Residue Cleanup

Who it is for: Any property where police dusted for fingerprints or used chemicals and sprays during their search. After a homicide, the amount of residue is often large.

First the crew learns which products police used and which finishes might discolor. Loose powder is vacuumed with fine-filter equipment, not swept. Chemical films are wiped away with cleaners safe for each surface. If anything that might be evidence turns up, work stops and the detective is called.

What you should get: Surfaces cleared of residue, and a note on any finish that may need repainting or replacement.

Full Structural Restoration

Who it is for: Homes where blood soaked into subfloor, walls, or insulation, so that parts of the building had to be removed. It prepares the property for rebuilding.

The crew removes any remaining damaged materials and disinfects the exposed frame. They confirm everything is clean and dry before anything is closed up. They give your contractor photos and material lists. Their final inspection checks the work against the written plan.

What you should get: A cleared structure ready for repairs, with records kept separate from any rebuild bid.

10 working days

Under 29 CFR 1910.1030, employers must offer the hepatitis B vaccine within 10 working days of assigning a worker to tasks with occupational blood exposure.

61.4%

In 2024, 61.4% of U.S. murder offenses were cleared by arrest or exceptional means, the highest violent-crime clearance rate.

What falls outside these services

  • Investigating the crime or collecting evidence. That remains with the police and the prosecutor's office.
  • Rebuilding walls, floors, or finishes. A general contractor handles that once the property is cleared.
  • Legal help with the criminal case, estate, or restitution. A lawyer or your victim advocate can guide you.
  • Filing your compensation claim for you. Your victim advocate can help you complete the application.
  • Counseling and trauma support. Victim services, a counselor, or 988 can help.

Life after the cleanup

Keep every record the crew gives you, along with the police case number and your advocate's contact. Insurers, the compensation program, a restitution hearing, or a future buyer may each ask to see them. If any odor or stain appears after rebuilding, call the company back.

Coming back to the home can reopen grief, even after it has been fully restored. Many victim service programs offer counseling for families of homicide victims, often at no cost. Support groups for families who lost someone to violence also exist in many areas, and your advocate can help you find one.

Before you hire: homicide cleanup questions

Can the work pause if police need the property again?

Yes. Sometimes detectives return with a follow-up question or request. A careful company will stop, secure the area, and wait until police say work can continue. This may add a short delay or cost. Ask the company in advance how they handle a pause, and whether their estimate allows for it.

How is broken glass or other sharp debris handled?

Sharp items are picked up before any other cleanup. The crew places them in hard containers that cannot be punctured and seals them. This protects the crew and anyone who handles the waste later. Families should not try to sweep or pick up glass in the affected areas, even if it looks clean.

What should the invoice show for a victim compensation claim?

Programs usually want the property address, the dates of service, and a clear list of what was done. Ask the company to separate cleanup from rebuilding and to include photos or a scope report. Your advocate can tell you what your state's program needs. Keep copies of everything you send.

What else might police leave behind besides fingerprint powder?

Investigators may use sprays or chemicals to reveal traces, tape markers, and evidence labels. They may also cut samples from carpet or walls. The residue cleanup service addresses what they leave, and the structural service covers areas where material was taken. Ask the crew to note anything they find and cannot fully clean.

Who rebuilds the room after Full Structural Restoration?

A general contractor usually does the rebuild once the space is cleared. The cleanup crew passes along photos and material lists so the contractor knows what was removed. Some cleanup companies offer rebuild services too, but those should be priced separately. That way insurers and compensation programs can see which costs belong to cleanup.

Why might the ceiling or upper walls need attention?

Contamination does not always stay at floor level. The crew checks walls and ceilings in each affected room and cleans or removes what they find. Sometimes this is the reason a room needs painting or new drywall after cleanup. Ask the crew to show you in photos which areas were treated.

How long should we keep the cleanup records?

Keep them at least until the criminal case, insurance claims, and any compensation claim are fully closed. Restitution orders can come long after the cleanup. A future buyer or tenant may also want proof the home was properly restored. Your advocate or a lawyer can advise on anything specific to your state.
